The Mississippi Conference would like to thank all the individuals, teams and congregations that have put their faith in action and signed up to aid our disaster response efforts. We would also like to express our gratitude to the North Carolina, North Georgia, Alabama-West Florida and South Georgia conferences, that have reached out to offer prayer and assistance for our connectional United Methodist disaster response. Additionally, because of the global giving and ministry across the connection through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the Mississippi Conference has been awarded a $10,000 grant to assist with relief efforts.
Here’s the latest news: cleaning and hygiene kits have arrived from Sager Brown Depot—a United Methodist warehouse in Louisiana for disaster response materials—and those kits have been delivered throughout Hinds, Rankin and Simpson Counties. Those who have signed up to drive/deliver will be contacted as needed to re-stock sites. We are at maximum capacity for clean-up kits. However, a list will be created for needed items, and then shared once finalized.
Christ United Methodist Church in Jackson is being used as a Multi-Agency Resource Center for those affected by Pearl River Flooding for the next seven to 10 days. Volunteers will be contacted in the near future as navigators to direct people to the appropriate resource, representatives at the UMCOR table, emotional/spiritual care or to help load supplies into cars.
The mandatory evacuation has been lifted and assessment teams have entered. Early Response Teams (ERTs) will be needed beginning Monday, February 24. Clean-up teams must have a trained ERT team leader. Click here to register as a volunteer or ERT. Trainings for disaster casework and screening, Early Response Team training and cleaning out flooded homes are being scheduled. More updates will be shared about these opportunities to serve as details are finalized.
We are accepting financial contributions to aid with response efforts. Those who feel led to give may write a check and put ‘2020 February Flood Recovery’ in the memo line. Make checks payable to:
