Brothers and sisters in Christ,
In mid-April, I informed you that the members of Bellwether United Methodist Church in Jackson participated in a called church conference to individually withdraw membership from The United Methodist Church. In our continued efforts to keep you abreast of this situation, I would like to give you an update on the results of the 2016 Book of Discipline’s Paragraph 213 process.
The Mississippi Conference of The United Methodist Church has determined, based on the paragraph 213 process and with the East Jackson District Building and Location Committee, that we will not continue the operation of a United Methodist Church in that location. The prior-appointed clergy at Bellwether—senior pastor, John Hugh Tate—has voluntarily surrendered his credentials and is no longer a United Methodist minister. Bellwether has reached a financial agreement with the conference and will retain ownership of its property.
Bishop James E. Swanson, Sr.
