FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 14, 2020
Greetings Mississippi Conference,
We are grateful for your patience as we constantly adapt to the ever-changing data concerning the impact of the coronavirus. We are in extraordinary times in the midst of this pandemic, and we want to operate out of an abundance of caution for all the lives who would be at risk attending the 2020 Session of the Mississippi Annual Conference. Therefore, in accordance with the Book of Discipline and the accepted practice of the Mississippi Annual Conference in extension of the previously passed Emergency Standing Rule 28; the extended cabinet will meet ad interim—without the gathering of lay and clergy members—to approve the required business of the Mississippi Annual Conference for 2020. The extended cabinet is made up of: 11 district superintendents, the conference lay leader, the director of the Mississippi United Methodist Foundation, the administrative assistant to the bishop/faith community formation director, the director of connectional ministries and communications, the treasurer/director of finance and administration and conference benefits officer and the director of spiritual leadership.
The extended cabinet will meet Monday, July 27 at 9:00 a.m. as previously announced. The proceedings will be streamed online for everyone to observe on a Zoom Webinar and on The Mississippi Conference Facebook page.
The laity executive session will be held Sunday, July 26 at 3:00 p.m. via Zoom webinar as originally scheduled. To view the agenda click here. To connect to the Zoom Webinar click here. To participate by phone dial, 1.669.900.6833 and enter Webinar ID: 959 8865 9439.
As an extension to the previously published deadline, members of the annual conference will have until Friday, July 17 to email your district office to provide any feedback or questions specifically on action items that will be addressed at the ad interim session.
There will be no worship or memorial services. While memoirs honoring those who have died during the past conference year will still be published in the journal this year, the deceased will be recognized and their families will be invited to the 2021 Session of the Mississippi Annual Conference to participate in that memorial service.
Proposed Action Items

The ordination service scheduled for July 28, 2020 will be postponed until a future date yet to be determined. All participants (those being commissioned, ordained or welcomed into associate membership) will be contacted by the office of spiritual leadership to discuss potential scenarios and scheduling. Remember that all clergy status changes were voted on by the clergy session are already in effect.
Finally, brothers and sisters, remember that you are not your own and you are temples of the Holy Spirit and you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Care for the other members of the body of Christ and wear a mask when in a public gathering, practice social distancing by giving yourself at least six feet of space between you and your neighbor and wash and sanitize your hands often.
